Resilience and substance use

0/9 Steps

Some people may use drugs to cope with and get through traumatic or highly difficult experiences, both past and present. While such a response is normal, it will likely have a negative affect on ones physical and mental health and will cause more problems in the long run. So while drug use helps us get through hard times, it is only helpful in the short-term, by helping us forget our problems.

It’s important to remember that we all have resilience within us, and we can learn to increase our resilience abilities!

So what could someone using drugs do to build on their resilience?

One of the most important ways to build on our resilience is having a strong support system.

Some of the other ways are:

· Learning effective and healthy coping strategies · Being able to problem solve. You can go here to improve your problem-solving skills · Believing in a faith/religion/spirituality or having an understanding of one’s meaning and purpose in life · Having a positive self-image and outlook on life

P.S. You can go here to improve your problem-solving skills on RAMP!

There are many different ways to increase one’s resilience. The ones provided above are just some of the ones that have been shown to help. But everyone is different and will have different strengths.

Later in this module, you will get to think about and identify your own strengths that will help you build more resilience.
