Why is stigma a problem for people who use drugs?

  • Believing the stigma about yourself: This leads to a negative view of yourself and low self-esteem. Which can create additional mental health problems, like depression, and worsen overall health and quality of life.
  • Barriers to healthcare: stigma can prevent those who are affected by substance use problemsfrom seeking care because they may feel unwelcomed, afraid of being treated poorly by staff or feel unworthy of receiving services. (however, they are very worthy!).
  • Barriers to social support: in the same way, stigma can create fear of reaching out to new people or sharing experiences about substance use with loved ones. This can lead to social isolation, poor mental health, increased risk of overdose and worsening of substance use patterns.

You might find it hard to face the stigma surrounding substance use. If you feel this way, you are not alone. However, it is important that you are able to feel good about yourself and be able to do the things you want to do in life. Go through the exercises below to raise your self-esteem and recognize your strengths and abilities.
