Activity 1- Observe your thoughts

One strategy to reduce rumination is to observe your thoughts without actively engaging with them, meaning you notice them but don’t attach any emotion or thought to them; just watch them go by.

The below video uses the example of your thoughts as leaves on a stream. You can listen to the guide as you create this image in your head.

    • If that image doesn’t work for you, picture your thoughts written on a banner being pulled by an airplane. Watch it fly around without reacting to it.

In this way, you become the observer of your own negative thoughts. You can choose not to engage with the thought but to instead be a bystander.
