What is trauma?

What is trauma?

According to the Center for Mental Health and Addiction, trauma is defined as the lasting emotional response that often results from living through a distressing event.

Trauma can arise from:

  • A singular event (eg. surviving a car crash)
  • A series of events (eg. experiencing repeated physical abuse)
  • or from certain circumstances (eg. living in a war torn country)

Additionally, a traumatic event can be something that you have experienced, or something that has affected your loved ones, or it can be something you have witnessed or been exposed to over time.
