What is trauma?
In your life, you may have experienced or witnessed distressing events or circumstances. This could be living in extreme poverty, experiencing or witnessing violence, or having to cope with the sudden death of a loved one.
These experiences can cause trauma.
- Trauma refers to an individual’s response to stressful events or experiences.
How can a trauma affect you?
Everyone experiences trauma differently and has a unique experience. In general, experiencing trauma may affect your:
- Mental health – Trauma can affect how you feel. For example, you may feel angry, guilty or stressed.
- Physical health – Trauma can affect your body. For example, you may struggle to fall asleep at night.
It can also affect your daily life in many other ways. You may find yourself wanting to spend more time alone or feel detached from your body.
