Lesson 4 of 16
In Progress

Define the problem

Okay, now it’s time to choose one of the problems you listed and work through it using this lesson.

A few things to keep in mind when choosing a problem to work on:

  • The problem should be objective
    • e.g. “I’m too lazy” is subjective. Instead, you can write something like this: “I’m not getting my scheduled tasks done.”
  • State the problem in a way that gives you control over it
    • e.g. “I’m always tired” makes it feel like it’s out of your control. Instead, you can say: “I’m not getting enough sleep because I’m going to bed too late.”

The key thing is that by thinking about and defining how the problem affects your functioning, you can find different ways to meet those needs.

How would you define your chosen problem?

“I‘m not getting enough sleep for my workdays because I‘m going to bed after midnight”

“I’m putting myself at a higher risk of overdose when I use alone”

“I’m having trouble with stopping my use of heroin”
