Substitution Treatment

Opioid substitution treatment or simply “substitution treatment” is an effective way to reduce cravings and help avoid the dreaded withdrawal symptoms. Other names for substitution treatment include methadone maintenance treatment (MMT), opioid agonist treatment (OAT) or medication-assisted treatment (MAT). All of these treatments refer to substituting the drug you are using such as street heroin or fentanyl, with a safer alternative to reduce use, cravings, withdrawals and your risk of overdosing.

This module will cover topics such as the different types of substitution medication available, what other support you can get, as well as debunking some myths about substitution treatment. The goal is to provide you with information, tools, and resources to support you in reducing or overcoming your opioid use.
