PTSD Risk Factors

Risk factors are factors that can increase your likelihood of developing a certain condition.

In regards to developing PTSD, you are more likely to develop PTSD symptoms if you have:

Previous traumatic experiences: Experiencing a new trauma can compound and add to the effects of previous traumatic experiences

Family history of PTSD or other mental health conditions: If you have a family history of mental health conditions, you may be more susceptible to developing PTSD

Substance Use:  Using substances can increase your likelihood of developing PTSD. Later on in the module, we will review how PTSD and trauma are related to substance use. 

Social support: Not having enough support after a traumatic incident can increase your risk of PTSD
