What is Fentanyl and Why Is It so Deadly?
Fentanyl belongs to a group of drugs called opioids. Opioids are drugs that are primarily used to treat pain. Different opioids can have different potencies. Potency refers to how powerful of an influence a drug has. Fentanyl is an extremely potent drug compared to other opioids, such as heroin. In fact, fentanyl is 50 times as powerful as heroin. Some of the effects of fentanyl include relaxation, euphoria, pain relief, sedation, confusion, drowsiness, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, urinary retention, pupillary constriction, and respiratory depression. You will learn more about these effects throughout the module!
