Overview

Knowing this relationship, with trauma and substance use frequently co-occurring, what is the relationship between them?

The answer is more complicated than trauma causing substance use, or substance use causing trauma. Rather both topics are interconnected and can form a vicious cycle.

The relationship goes both ways: 

  • A traumatic experience increases your risk of substance use, and 
  • substance use itself increases your risk of a traumatic experience
