Past Pandemics

We have learned many things from past pandemics. 

These include:

  • Social distancing works to reduce the spread of infection
  • Viruses can affect all age groups, even young people
  • The 1918 influenza showed large movements of people can quickly spread the virus
  • Depression, anxiety and panic attack increased during SARS outbreak
  • Quarantining during SARS outbreak was associated with high depressive symptoms

* Important Note: We have also learned from past pandemics that stigmatization can arise. Unfortunately, people tend to blame those who get sick. For example, during HIV/AIDS epidemic, blame was disproportionately put on homosexual people. Another example is the the SARS pandemic, where blame was mistakenly put on Chinese people.
