It is normal for the various to undergo changes as it passes from person to person throughout the population. These changes can lead to variants – versions of the virus that are slightly different than the original form.

Delta is the most common variant in Canada and most countries around the world. The key differences in the Delta variant are that it is more contagious and can lead to more severe illness, particularly in those who are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated against COVID-19.

Since the Delta variant is shown to spread easily between people, it is important to receive both doses of your vaccine to prevent severe outcomes and the risk of infection. Following health guidelines such as social distancing, wearing a mask and handwashing remain effective in protecting yourself against the variants.
