Getting over the first week is the hardest part! But unfortunately, it’s not over yet. It takes a lot of time for the body to recover from long time opioid use and will still experience discomfort due to not having opioids anymore. What you will experience at this stage is called Post-Acute Withdrawal Syndrome (PAWS).
Because PAWS symptoms are largely psychological and emotional, ongoing support from therapists or counselors is important.
Six Common PAWS Symptoms
Inability to think clearly
Memory problems
Emtional overreaction or numbness
Physical coordination
Stress sensitivity
Sleep distubances
If You're Feeling Overwhelmed with PAWS Symptoms
Focus on your progress
Stay Active
Continue medical and mental health care
Maintain a healthy lifestyle
Find support
The length of withdrawal is different for everyone! It depends on:
- how long you used for
- type of drug used
- method used (snorting, injecting)
- amount used
- family history & genetics
- physical and mental health
