What’s Thoughts Got To Do With It?

There is a strong connection between your emotions, thoughts, and actions.

These thought patterns can also happen when someone is relapsing. When you’re at risk, it may feel like you need to use and your thoughts may be filled with using. Due to this, we can experience common cognitive distortions in relapse, which are where your thoughts make you believe misguided information. These include:

  •  Denying that you are falling into old habits: “I’ve been using again this week because I am stressed about work. I won’t use again after this week”
  • Rationalizing high risk behaviour: “I know I shouldn’t walk past the bar on my way home. But I will only walk by this once, so it’s fine”
  • Someone else’s fault: “My friends were all drinking so I had a beer too”
Intrusive thoughts are unwanted thoughts that can happen without warning, such as wanting to use during times of stress. Coping with these intrusive and destructive thoughts can be difficult, but analyzing the situation and looking for other possible explanations might help you feel more positive.
